Perfect Gardening Gifts

Gardening gifts will make any gardener happy!  Even a person who just likes to spend time in their garden and have someone else do the work will appreciate garden oriented gifts. It is very simple these days to choose perfect gardening gifts.  You no longer have to drive miles to a nursery and then pick out something from among a huge range of faded looking plants without knowing if your loved one will like it or even whether it will grow in their yard.  Now you can order online and you can research all of this before you order anything.  Check out gardening websites or simply send your question to the online store by email.  In most cases you will receive a reply very fast. Plants Certain plants make particularly good gifts.  You will probably want to aim for perennials, that is, plants that will not die after just one season.  A rose bush is a great choice for wedding anniversaries.  A miniature rose in a container can grow just about anywhere.  You can choose white roses for a silver wedding or yellow roses for a golden wedding.  Red roses, of course, are perfect for any anniversary and also for Valentine's Day. However, there ...

Organic Gardening Books

Organic gardening books can be very useful for anybody who wants to begin gardening in the organic way.  This means, of course, avoiding use of any harmful chemical pesticides or fertilizers.  In addition, if you want a truly organic garden, you will need to begin from seeds or bedding plants that have been raised the organic way. When you are choosing organic gardening books there are certain things that you should look out for.  Keep in mind that there is no need to choose a book that gives a lot of information about different plants.  You can get that information from any gardening book.  What you need from a book about organic gardening is the information that is specific to working in your garden in the natural way. Pest Control Organic gardening books will normally contain some information on pest control.  This is an important subject because the green gardener will not use most of the common pesticides and sprays that can be found in plant nurseries.  Instead, you will want to know about pest control methods that are less harmful to the environment. There are some natural methods of killing certain pests that you can learn about from books about organic gardening.  In ...

Gardening with Kids

Gardening with kids is a wonderful activity.  It is amazing to see the astonishment on a young child's face when something that they planted begins to grow!  Older kids can be involved in the whole process of planning out, planting, watering and harvesting. Gardening does not offer the instant rewards that many children expect of life these days.  It can help them to learn patience as well as the importance of taking care of things over a period of time.  Kids who are used to getting everything they want immediately in our electronic age can benefit greatly from a return to old fashioned activities like this. So what should you grow when gardening with kids?  Flowers, vegetables and herbs can all be used.  If there is something that they particularly like to eat, for example cucumber, that would be ideal.  Try to plan so that different things will be ready at different times.  Flowers often appear quickly and a child can take great pride in creating a flower arrangement for the table from his or her own garden. With small children, less is often better.  Just a tray of seeds in the house or a container in the yard will be enough.  At ...

Organic Tomato Gardening Tips

Organic tomato gardening is perfect for almost every backyard, however small.  All you need is a sunny corner.  And nothing beats the taste of freshly picked sun ripened tomatoes from your own garden!  Follow our tips for the perfect home grown organic tomatoes. 1. Location Tomatoes need support and like a sunny, sheltered site.  They usually prefer slightly acidic soil.  A south or west facing fence or trellis is ideal.  Some varieties grow up to 6 feet tall, others are smaller. 2. Variety There are many different kinds of tomato.  If you want a truly organic garden, you will want to start out with organic tomato seeds.  Otherwise you can use regular seeds and simply avoid using chemicals on your plants. The best way to choose a tomato variety is to ask around among your neighbors.  They will have the same climate and soil type, so what works for them will probably work for you.  Maybe they will even share seeds with you. 3. Feeding Successful organic tomato gardening requires some attention.  Feed plants at least twice in the season with a good organic fertilizer.  Slow release fertilizers in the soil are more effective than liquids.  Spraying with kelp and fish emulsion from time to time will ...

Green-Earth Friendly Weed Killer

Sure, you want to get rid of those weeds in your yard or in the cracks in the sidewalk outdoors. However, you don't want to blast the environment with nasty chemicals either.  There is another way!  You can use earth friendly weed killer instead of using chemicals to eliminate weeds.  In fact, water is the best option. Of course, you can't just water the garden and expect the weeds to die.  What you need to do is take some water, then boil it, and use it on the weeds that are along the path or driveway.  This is a simple solution, and there are other earth friendly weed killer options that you can use as well. Another great idea for killing off weeds is strong saline salt solution.  If you have a gravel driveway and you want to get rid of weeds, then this is a great option.  Of course, you don't want to use it near other plants that you want to keep alive.  Make a salt solution and use it on the weeds.  It will kill off the weeds and keep them from growing in that area again. White vinegar also can help you kill off weeds in an earth friendly ...
