Never throw oatmeal out again. Some people find oatmeal bland, or something that the doctor suggested that you bought out and forgot about. Others like it for breakfast but only when loaded up with lots of cream and sugar. Little do most people know, oatmeal has many uses to help you save money, get creative, and healthier.
People typically think of instant oatmeal when they think of oatmeal. Instant oatmeal is pre-cooked and is usually sweetened with added flavors. Rolled oats are somewhat common and they are steamed, flattened and lightly toasted. The healthiest type of oatmeal is made from whole-grain, steel-cut oats, also known as coarse-cut or Irish oats, because they retain more of the nutritious bran layer. Nutritionists suggest purchasing unsweetened oatmeal, and adding a touch of honey, maple syrup, agave or other flavoring.
Oats are an excellent source of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, thiamine, iron, beta-glucan and the antioxidants known as avenanthramides. Beta-glucan may help blood sugar levels, while avenanthramides may help promote healthy circulation. Oatmeal is also thought to aid in reducing cholesterol levels and it may boost the immune system.
