Hollywood celebrities command attention, no exception. That is why they are the front liners and trendsetters in today’s green movement. From eco-friendly home renovations to hybrid cars, celebrities are now making conscious effort to saving the planet in their own simple ways. In support to their organizations and social causes, they are the ones who also invite everyone else to make a difference. From Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz to Edward Norton, Hollywood personalities are stepping up to the commitment and responsibility of promoting awareness in saving the planet.
The interest in the environment is more than just a passing fad to most celebrities. Brad Pitt may have been the sexiest man alive but he is also one environmentally aware man alive. After the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina, Brad Pitt is one of the celebrities who saw the opportunity to contribute to the reconstruction of the community, home and lives of those who were battered by the typhoon in New Orleans. He donated $5 Million USD to “Make it Right”, an organization involved in the Katrina project. He also teamed up with another organization, the Global Green and sponsored the architectural design challenge in designing more environmentally sustainable housing.
Small acts like lending voices to public service announcements and invitations to get involved with some organizations or Earth Day events are done by many Hollywood celebrities. Eco messages were filmed by NBCU talents like Alec Baldwin, Howie Mandel, Tricia Helfer, Jeffrey Donovan and Maria Celeste. Robert Redford worked with the Sundance Green Channel to its programs the credibility and cachet they needed.
When others opt to stay where the action is, others are promoting environmental awareness in their own ways. To prove that they are practicing what they are teaching, stars like Cameron Diaz drives hybrid cars. Leonardi diCaprio is into producing television programs that promote awareness to the environment. For instance, he has worked with Discovery, launching “Eco-Town”, a 13-part documentary series about the rebuilding of the tornado-battered Kansas town.
The NBC network has also launched its Hollywood Goes Green agenda, where studio executives have taken the stage to present their respective eco-programs. For instance, Matt Lauer reported from the Arctic in one episode of the “Today” show. Ann Curry reported from Antartica and All Roker reported from the equator. These segments have drawn high ratings from the viewers.
Getting people to understand and talk about environmental issues is easy when these issues are fed by celebrities. Although Hollywood celebrities do not hold the answer to environmental issues like pollution, global warming, and climate change, they are united in promoting awareness to help people understand and convince them to participate to the global move of saving the earth.
To promote more sustainable resources, many chose the vegan lifestyle to do their part in preserving the earth. The high demand for meat actually has an impact to the environment. The farming methods as well as the chemicals used to produce meat have significant contributions to increasing the elements that cause climate change. Even though the subject is still under several debates, many celebrities like Natalie Portman, Toby Maguire, Jessica Biel, Pierce Brosnan, Michael J. Fox, Brooke Shields, Dustin Hoffman, Alicia Silverstone, Pamela Anderson and dozens more have chosen the vegan lifestyle.
