When the holidays come around, they bring with them some very unique challenges if you want to go green.  We focus on entertaining others and giving gifts, and it’s easy to throw out the choice we have made to live in a sustainable way.  The thing is, it doesn’t have to be this way.  Here is a look at some great tips that can help you make the right choices so you can have a sustainable holiday that keeps our environment safe.

Tips for Giving Gifts

There are actually quite a few ways you can give gifts while still making sure you have a sustainable holiday.  Here are some great tips to help you keep gift giving green this year.

– Buy fewer gifts for each person

– Purchase gifts that are second hand

– Go with gift certificates you make yourself

– Hand make your gifts

– Give to charity in the name of someone for a gift

– Come up with a system that allows everyone in your family to buy a gift for one other person.  Set a price limit.  You’ll be surprised on how much it cuts down on extra gifts.

Just remember, if you want to make some gift giving changes, make sure you explain this to everyone in the family before the holidays.  Let them know why you want to make the change as well.

Tips for Wrapping Gifts

It’s pretty sad that so much wrapping paper just ends up in the trash after Christmas morning.  What a huge waste.  However, there are some ways that you can wrap your gifts to keep Christmas morning a bit more green and sustainable.

– Go with gift bags that are reusable

– Use newspaper pages, like the comic pages, to wrap up gifts

– Use artwork by the kids for wrapping paper

– Use paper that you kept from last year

– Sew gift bags and use them again and again

– Purchase pillow cases and use them to wrap up larger gifts

Tips for Entertaining

Whether you are having a small family gathering or you are having a huge holiday get together, you don’t have to throw away your choice to keep it all sustainable.  Here are several great tips to help you as your entertain so you don’t have to fill up the cans with garbage when you’re done.

– Use silverware and dishes that are NOT disposable.  It will cost a bit, but that way you don’t throw it all away.

– Instead of purchasing ice, make your own.

– Go with tablecloths and napkins that are made out of fabric.  This way you can wash them and reuse them again and again.

– Instead paper invitations, go with online invites.

– Try not to have a lot of food waste.  Put away leftovers quickly to avoid spoiling or give away extra food to your guests.
