The consumption and the production of meat in general actually has an effect on our planet.  Livestock centers around the world are the cause of around 18% of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the planet so when you think about it, that is a very large number.  This will also affect the quality of water around the world as well as biodiversity.  Therefore, we should all consider a few things about the animals that provide us with food to eat and the environment that we live and breathe in.

One of the best things you can do is avoid buying any processed food that takeout is usually made from.  That is why it is important for a person to know how to cook and more importantly, how to cook meat.  There are a number of different books that you can purchase to help make you a better cook or you can graze some ideas off of cooking channels on your television.  Even this small step can help lower the number of livestock in centers where they are contained before they get made into processed food.

Another way that someone can help out with the problem we face with very large livestock centers is buying meat that is humanely raised.  Many of these livestock centers have very harsh living conditions for the livestock they harvest the meat from.  Many recent investigations done by the Humane society has proven the sad state of living conditions for these animals.  That is why buying meat from livestock centers that keep their animals humanely is so important.  More humane livestock centers will feed their animals on a pasture rather than a feedlot, which has many positive benefits.  For one, soil erosion is nominally decreased along water pollution as well.  Many of these centers have also reduced the amount of antibiotics given to their animals and have therefore caused a large improvement of the livestock’s overall health.

Buying less packaged meats will also helps to keep our environment healthy since packaging is one the leading items that populate our landfills.  In fact, packaging actually constitutes about one third of the worlds industrial waste.  That number is very large and should be reduced so that our environment can remain in more of a healthy state.  There is an overabundance of plastic wraps, paper materials and Styrofoam that take up space in these already overcrowded landfills.

Buying meat directly from farmers markets, sales clubs or other forms of buying meat from humane livestock sources is great for your wallet as it is for your environment.  You may even wish to try eating less meat than you usually do to help out this problem.  There are many other sources of protein besides meat so cutting back even a little bit will help out the problem as a whole.  The key to accomplishing this is to think in more green and clever ways that almost anyone can do.
