Fruit flies are definitely very annoying.  Sure, they won’t harm you, but they are definitely frustrating to deal with.  They especially show up during the end of summer when you have fruit that is overripe.  While no doubt you want to get rid of them, it is very important that you choose a natural option to eliminate them so you don’t bring harmful chemicals into your home.

Especially at the end of the summer, fruit flies show up in veggies, fruits, in garbage areas, and kitchens.  They are attracted to vegetables that are rotting and fruit that is overripe.  Fruit flies are actually house flies, but they are the smallest type of these flies.  They have red eyes and a body that is yellow.  They don’t carry around diseases, but they are pests that come in swarms and that may decide to breed in any overripe fruit that they find.  If you don’t want to end up with more, it’s important to learn how you can naturally get rid of them.

Going with natural options to eliminate fruit flies are safe and they are also effective as well.  With a few ingredients that are easy to find and a bit of knowledge, you can come up with a natural solution to this problem.

What You Need

There are a few ingredients that you’ll need to buy.  You need some basil leaves, some basil plants, lemongrass oil, as well as some cedar strips.  You can usually find all of these items at a health food store in your local area.

How to Eliminate the Fruit Flies

The first thing you can do if you want to get rid of fruit flies is to get rid of any overripe fruit.  If the fruit is overripe and going bad, just get rid of the fruit, and make sure you throw it away outside.  Another thing you can do is to close up the drains in the kitchen, since fruit flies often go to these drains to multiply.

Keeping the windows in your home open is a great idea as well.  Fruit flies like it warm, and wind and cold will help to drive them away.  Eliminating garbage from the kitchen area can be helpful as well.

To make a nice spray to get rid of them, put two ounces of hot water in a spray bottle, and then 10 drops of the lemongrass oil.  Start spraying around your home with the spray.  It should help to eliminate them.  Basil can keep fruit flies away, since they don’t like it.  Put some leaves in the bowls where you keep your fruit.  You can also keep some basil plants in the kitchen near where you keep fruit as well.

Another thing that fruit flies don’t like is cedar wood.  To keep them away, you can put cedar wood strips around the kitchen, especially near any fruit you have.  You may want to throw a few of these strips in your trash can to keep fruit flies out of the trash as well.

You don’t have to use harsh chemicals to get rid of fruit flies.  You can get rid of these pests in natural ways.  Try out these natural methods of eliminating these flies to make sure they don’t inhabit your house anymore.

I’ve found that washing your fruit, especially bananas, as soon as you bring it home from the store helps prevent fruit flies before they start. The fruit usually has the eggs of the flies on it and washing it thoroughly gets rid of the eggs.

leave an ounce of wine in your wine bottle, and add a small drop of dishsoap (don’t shake- you don’t want bubbles) and leave on the counter for a day. The fruit flies love it, and drown in the wine.
