Going green and living naturally is a lifestyle choice that is either handed down to us by our parents conditioned by the environment that we live in or is a conscious decision that we make because of self realization and awakening.  Over the years consumerism and commercialization had rendered us defunct, leaving us incapable of making the right decisions.  Shiny packaging and sugary treats took over our minds, leaving us incapable of making the right lifestyle choices.

The rude awakening of our past mistakes came in the form of environmental changes and health hazards.  Slowly people began realizing the consequences of the light bulb that was mistakenly left on and the can of food full of preservatives that had been consumed.  But was it too late for change?  Had the damage already been done?  Like the old adage goes” it’s never too late for change”, so it is still not too late to undo the damage that has been done.

It is small steps that one needs to take to bring about green lifestyle change in one’s life.  Adopting a new lifestyle requires the same amount of adjustment that you would need to make, as when you would while bringing in a new member into your household.

One of the easiest and the best ways of going green or back to nature is by incorporating organic food in your diet.  One does not need to make a complete switch from the regular fruits and vegetables that you have been consuming.  This can be a gradual process and you can start with adding five or six organic fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Organic food is a natural and healthy lifestyle option that you can choose.  By eating foods that are free of artificial preservatives and colors and have been cultivated in a safe, non toxic chemical and pesticide free environment, you are automatically reducing your health risks.

Studies have proved that organic foods are higher in vitamins and minerals and retain more nutritional value.  Research also proves that families and especially children who have an organic food diet are less prone to cancer and other growth and behavioral dysfunctions and also have better immunity.

A green lifestyle also involves cutting down on wastage and maximizing use of natural products.  This can start with switching your lights from bulbs to CFL, not wasting water by letting it run while you do the dishes, brush your teeth or simply soak in your tub, saying no to plastic, and switching to cloth nappies from disposable diapers etc.

The way ahead is by educating yourself on the evils of wastage.  Learn how disposable diapers are causing landfill issues or how each time you let the tap flow while you brush your teeth you deprive a family in a third world country of its daily quota of water.  Understand the need of recycling.  Remember that for each sheet of paper that you waste there are trees that are being felled and rainforests that are depleting.  The power to change the world is in your hands and if you turn a blind eye towards it, it is your children who will suffer and will be in want of the things that you so take for granted today… water, air and energy.
