Many people really enjoy cheese.  There are many types of cheese, from feta, to gouda, to mozzarella, cheddar, swiss, and more.  Although they may not be the best for staying slim, you may not realize that they may not be the best choice for the environment either.  Surely you would think that cheese is more eco friendly and humane than going with something like a big steak.

There are even many vegetarians that still think this way.  Many eat cheese on a regular basis.  Cheese has a lot of protein in it, it is full of great calcium, and a variety of other great nutrients that are important, especially if you are not eating some meat.  You will also find that cheese tastes great too.

You may think that eating cheese is a great choice.  More than likely you think you are going with a green lifestyle and great choices that are great for your health, the environment, and the animals.  However, this may not be the case.  In fact, there is a good chance that the cheese you are eating is as bad as the meats out there today.

Why is this a problem.  Well, one reason that cheese is not a great choice is because animals end up dying.  Sure, you are not eating the flesh of a cow, but you are getting the milk.  Cows have to keep having babies to produce milk, and in most cases, the bull calves end up being killed off and this occurs while they are still young.  The calf may be left to die if it is a bull or slaughtered right away, or it may be raised to make veal.  Also, cows usually only end up living until they are 5-7 years or age, instead of their natural lifespan, which is about 20 years.

Animal cruelty occurs as well, which brings into question whether cheese is humane.  Most cows end up being put in a stall where they are milked and fed and even if they get outside, they usually don’t end up having a pasture.  These cows are genetically engineered to give out more milk, and the growth hormones that are often given make it more likely that the cows will end up with a painful infection of the udder.

You’ll also find that eating cheese has an impact on the environment as well.  Cows have to be fed, and this requires that grain is shipped to the farms, which has an impact on the environment.  Also, the waste often ends up going into water systems because it is put out on the crops.  Methane is also produced by these cows as well, which is a greenhouse gas that is bad for the environment.

In reality, cheese isn’t that healthy for you either.  There is a lot of fat in cheese, even though it does have a nice amount of protein.  A lot of cholesterol is found in cheese as well.  You’ll actually find that there is less fat in a cut of beef and more protein too.  Beef has less cholesterol than cheese too, so beef is actually healthier than most of the cheeses available today.
