Many people today are turning to building zero-carbon homes.  They are doing this to harm the planet less and be more energy conscience.  With the fossil fuels being used up and polluting the atmosphere, people have started looking to more renewable resources for their energy needs.  When a house is built from the ground up it is easy to add in eco-friendly characteristics.

Clean Energy

Solar and wind power is being used more and more to light up or heat the homes.  These forms of energy are completely renewable and better yet clean.  They give off no carbon emissions what so ever.  Of course, these can be used along with traditional electricity too.  Some even sell their unused energy back to the power companies.  However, many are choosing to go totally off the grid too.  This means they provide 100% percent of their energy needs.

The goal is to have the house produce more energy than it consumes.  Many times lifestyles also need to be altered some too.  If a family wastes energy they will need to start conserving it to live this way.  However, technologies are improving all the time in this area.

Building Products

Today homes can be built with more eco-friendly supplies than in years past.  The concrete foundations can even be low carbon.  The wood beams can be made from recycled wood instead of more trees having to be cut down.  Insulation is of much friendlier substances today and works much more efficiently.

Appliances

The new appliances today are very energy efficient.  This lowers the total need the house has for energy.  Which helps the house use less energy than it produces.  All types of appliances have the Energy Star rating today which gives anyone a great idea of their energy consumption.

Other Features

The zero-carbon homes often have lots of windows on the south-facing wall.  This allows the sunlight to warm the house naturally cutting down on the energy need for heating at certain times of the day.  Windows throughout the house can be used for lighting during the day instead of electric lights being turned on.  If the house needs to be stay cool drapes, shades or curtains can block out the sunlight to help the house be cooler.

Old Houses

Old houses can be made more zero-carbon oriented in most cases too.  The addition of solar or wind power if the house is in the right location can help bring the house closer to zero-carbon conditions.  People can change the way they use the energy in their homes too, update their appliances to more energy efficient ones and open the curtains up to light natural lighting in.  Even though an old home may not be brought all the way to where a new home can be with this it is still worth doing these thing.

Remember that we are trying to lower the carbon emissions here to reduce risk of the climate changing along with conserving our resources.  So look into what you can do today to live a greener more zero-carbon life.
