It is great that you have decided to go green this year for Christmas. However, are you also teaching your kids how to be green for the holiday too? This is the way to make a lasting impression on the earth. Teach the whole family how to be eco-friendly for Christmas and all year through. For this article though we will give you some ideas for Christmas that you and the kids can do to have it green.
Baking Using Organic Ingredients
Baking is a great family activity to do with the kids. It is even better when you use only organic ingredients in your baked goods. Give the local farmers your business and buy their fresh produce, even the eggs can be organic remember. Teach your kids the reasoning behind organic foods such as no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Also the kids can learn how to measure the various ingredients into the dishes you are cooking which can help them with their math.
Ornaments from Recycled Paper
You and your kids will enjoy making paper snowflakes; you know the kind you used to cut out as a child. Instead of regular paper made from wood pulp though, use paper made from plant fibers such as corn husks or banana fibers. This adds the green touch to the whole project. Now all you need is some safety scissors and your kids to help. If you do not want to keep the snowflakes for the next year then you can use them in your paper mix to make your own paper and recycle them.
Decorations Made From Clay
What is earthier than clay? Nothing! It is just perfect for making green decorations for the Christmas tree too. Get your kids to make their own ideas for ornaments, or you can buy molds for the clay to be shaped with. Just be sure to get reusable molds so you do not throw them out. Some clay can even be baked in your oven to harden and can be painted in a variety of colors. Any leftover clay pieces can be dried and used at the bottom of your flower pots for drainage.
How to Have a Green Christmas Tree
A green Christmas tree just is a real tree it is that simple. No artificial trees allowed in a green Christmas. Make sure when using a cut tree for your holiday to have it ground for mulch after you are done with it. Also it could be used for a haven for wildlife or even fish in a pond.
If you want to really do it up right get a live tree to decorate. This way you can plant it in your yard after Christmas. You will be adding a tree to the earth instead of taking one away. Nothing smells better than a fresh pine tree whether it is alive or cut to add a special aroma to your house during the holidays. You also can teach your kids that the artificial trees are made with harmful chemicals and that they will not decompose naturally into the soil if they are thrown out.
The above ideas will help you teach your children how to have an eco-friendly Christmas.
