Most people have heard the phrase “Green Living” but many find themselves confused as just what it means to live green.  The basic principle behind green living is reducing a person’s use of the earth’s resources.  Your lifestyle certainly has a direct impact on the entire earth’s natural resources.  By living green, you help maintain the earth’s resources.  There are many ways you can participate in green living, and it is essential to note that going green does not mean you are going without.

Beauty Products

Most people, women in particular use beauty products, such as creams, moisturizers, cleansers, and face masks.  Many of the beauty products are biodegradable, which simply means that what is inside the jar or bottle will break down over a certain amount of time into nature.  It does not hang around the landfills for thousands of years like certain kinds of plastic can.

The problem with the term “biodegradable” is that the government does not place a specified number of days or years a product must break down.  To put it simply, if the government does not regulate it, so companies can place the label “biodegradable” even if the product takes 300 years to break down.  This information does not exactly thrill those people that are truly attempting to live a green lifestyle and conserve the earth’s resources by not adding products to the landfills that do not breakdown.

There are options and something you can look for when purchasing your beauty products.  When looking at the label, look for the words, “certified biodegradable” which is on several cleansers, soaps, and creams.  When the product is certified, it means it has undergone testing via the Scientific Certification System and the ingredients and containers is found to be at least 70 percent biodegradable after just 28 days.  This is a much better number than years for a product to break down.

In addition, many women use several steps in their skin care routine, which may make you feel beautiful, but what happens when those products get to the landfills in your cities?  Obviously, the fewer products you use, the better for the environment and the less you add to the pollution problem.  One person can make a difference, and of course if everyone takes this attitude, we begin working together to preserve the earth’s resources.

It is the small things you can do to make the world greener, such as using fewer beauty products in your routine, using products that are recyclable, and changing your light bulbs in your home to florescent.  All of these seemingly small things you do in your daily life add up to big things and all help preserve the plant.

Making a decision to live green today, helps ensure your grandchildren will have the needed resources to live a full life.  Going green preserves precious resources, sort of like saving money in a bank that earns interests, the more resources you conserve, the more you build up the bank of resources for future generations.
