In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift towards natural products in everything from personal skin care to power generation.  Also, you will observe many companies attaching labels like “green”, “natural” and “eco-friendly”, to name a few, to their products.

Natural Is Not Always the Best

However, you should beware as natural products are not necessarily the best for human consumption.  In fact, many of the nature’s products in their raw state are very toxic or even fatal to human and animal health even in small quantities.  For example, arsenic, cyanide and mercury all exist in nature as raw materials and can be considered natural in every sense of the word.  You must beware because these natural substances are the culprits behind thousands of deaths, both deliberate and accidental.

Many personal home care products can be considered natural but may not exactly good next to any part of your body, much less your internal organs.  Think of hydrogen peroxide, it is a natural cleansing agent but you should not drink it to clean your insides.  Or take the example of crude oil, which is the main material in plastics.  We all know by now the negative effects of plastic on the environment.  So it is logical to assume that not all natural products are best.

Manufacturers may have stepped the fine line between marketing license and consumer deception one too many times.  The term “natural” is just too abused that seeing one slapped on a product should raise warning bells in your head.

Natural Things to Do

So what is an individual desiring to avail of the benefits of natural products to do amidst such abuse?  Well, there are many actions to take in protecting your consumer rights, general health and personal pockets against said deceptions.

First, you should read labels.  We are not just talking about the front product labels but, more importantly, the label pertaining to ingredients.  If you see something suspicious, then it is more likely harmful to your health.  Of course, you cannot rely on instincts alone.  You must do your research on the product ingredients just to be sure.  It will take a little of your time but the benefits will be well worth it.

Second, you should look at the company itself.  With the many trade publications in print and on the Internet, you should be able to find reliable information on the manufacturer or distributor of the so-called natural products.  Company reputation in the natural food industry is very important simply because a reputable organization makes brisk business largely on its good name and on its products.

Third, you may have to ask for personal recommendations from your similarly-minded friends.  More often than not, the best endorsements come from family and friends who actually use the products instead of celebrity endorsers.

The best way to protect yourself, nonetheless, is still your common sense.  Do not believe everything you hear and see - put your mind to work by questioning virtually all the aspects of the product.  Indeed, going green need not mean becoming the victim of a scam.  You just have to let human nature come in especially the part where common sense is concerned.
