Light Pollution – An Explanation

When you think of pollution, the humble light bulb probably doesn’t come to mind. Instead, you might envisage smoke stacks belching clouds of smoke, or a sky heavy with smog. Keep those smoke stacks in mind, though – they do have something to do with light pollution.

Humankind’s electrical illumination of the earth can be seen from outer space. While the effect is stunning and beautiful, there is a growing movement toward lessening artificial lighting. Called “light pollution,” the excessive use of electrical lighting is said to have a significant environmental impact. Here are some reasons why some people are concerned about light pollution.

The Many Benefits of Bowen Technique

Bowen Therapy or Bowen Technique is a gentle means of soft tissue relaxation that does not involve external, forceful manipulation. Because of its gentle approach, all ages can undergo the therapy, including newborns and the very elderly (and everyone in between!). Bowen aims to achieve deep relaxation for the participant. When that level of relaxation is reached, the body becomes aligned, balanced, and able to heal itself.

When a participant undergoes Bowen Technique, he or she experiences a gentle massage of the muscles and tissues over the problem area. Practitioners often begin in the abdominal region, as this is seen as the “center” of the body. Practitioners leave the room before moving to another area of the body, slowing the pace and giving their clients a chance to relax even more.

PVC Floors and Health

You may not think much about your floors and what they are made of. Your goal may simply be to keep your floor clean – a clean floor is a healthy one, right? Actually, it depends…your floor may be very clean but still have a negative effect on your family’s health. Here are some reasons why.

Flooring Material

If you have flooring that is not hardwood, tile or carpet, you probably refer to it as “linoleum.” However, unless your house pre-dates the 1950s and has the original flooring, it’s more than likely that you have vinyl flooring.

Sun Exposure and Cataracts – How to Protect Your Eyes

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 18 million people around the world who are blind due to cataracts. Five percent of those 18 million people can attribute their cataract-caused blindness directly to exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also notes the correlation between ultraviolet radiation and eye problems, including cataracts.

The WHO and the EPA further suggest protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation to prevent eye damage. The WHO has developed a UV index to indicate when the risk of damaging rays are highest. The UV index refers to the level of UV radiation present under different conditions. For example, the UV index is higher when you are around a reflective surface such as water or snow than when you are surrounded by grass and soil.

What Exactly is Smog and How Does It Affect Our Health

The term “smog” is a combination of the words “smoke” and “fog,” and that is essentially what it is. Smog forms when particles of dust, smoke, industrial emissions, or other pollutants mingle with water droplets in the atmosphere. Because it is heavier than smoke or fog alone, it tends to collect in valleys and hollows.

Smog can, in fact, be harmful to your health.
1. Ozone

You may remember that the hole in the ozone layer was a topic of heated debate some years ago. That left many of us with the impression that the depletion of ozone is bad; thus the creation of ozone must be good. However, the ozone layer of the atmosphere is far above the earth, and is not breathed by humans. Its function is to filter out harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, shielding the earth from excessive warming and other harmful irradiative effects. But ozone that forms at ground level is different.
