For many of us, the eucalyptus tree conjures up images of the cute koala bears and the destructive bush fires of the Australian forest as well as the familiar scent of Vicks VapoRub. For herbalists, the eucalyptus tree is a treasure trove of natural medicines for illnesses ranging from coughs and colds to burns to arthritis. These medicinal qualities are possible because the eucalyptus tree is rich in tannins and flavonoids, just two of the compounds that provide it with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antispasmodic properties.
Did you know, however, that the eucalyptus tree is now used to make sleeping better while making the environment better, too? Yes, fibers from the eucalyptus trees are now used in the production of bed sheets, which the hospitality industry has enthusiastically taken up.
Production Process, Or At Least What We Know Of It
According to the retailer of these eucalyptus bed sheets, these linens are made with non-toxic solvents specifically in the conversion of the pulp into fiber. Furthermore, 99.6 percent of said solvent is subsequently recovered, reused and recycled. Thus, the eucalyptus bed sheets provide for positive environmental impact in two ways.
Also, the production process for eucalyptus bed sheets uses 100 times less water than the conventional cotton linens. Add in the claim that the fiber yield of eucalyptus fiber is ten times higher than that for cotton and you have a case for green bed sheets like no other.
Furthermore, no part of the harvested eucalyptus tree goes to waste. Forty percent becomes pulp, twenty percent transforms into artificial sweeteners and vinegar and the remaining wood scraps are burned as fuel for main grid electricity. Aside from the production process, the main material of this new innovation in linens is also highly renewable. The eucalyptus tree is known for its amazing ability to bounce back from a stump on the ground!
Benefits of Use, So Far As Is Known
First off, it must be noted that the eucalyptus tree is known for its insect repellant properties. You can actually add eucalyptus oil into water and use as garden and home spray to keep the bugs away, thanks to its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Thus, it is no surprise that the most popular benefit of eucalyptus bed sheets is its ability to significantly deter the growth of bedbugs! In a study conducted by the American Society for Testing and Materials, it was found out that fewer bedbugs colonized the eucalyptus bed sheets than the traditional linens.
This is good news for the hospitality industry that has suffered through bedbug disasters in recent years. Households will also benefit from the eucalyptus bed sheets especially those with allergic reactions to dust mites and bedbugs, as is the case in asthmatic persons.
Well, of course, bed sheets are only as good as their texture on the skin once you lie down on them. Eucalyptus bed sheets are gaining a reputation for being as soft as pure cotton with the added advantage of absorbing moisture and releasing it away from your body. As a result, lesser use of artificial antibacterial agents like Triclosan, which can cause allergic reactions, is possible.
So, the next time you are thinking of decorating your bedrooms, try the eucalyptus bed sheets. They will be well worth the money you spend them on.

We used to run through the woods and if we needed to blow our noses we would use the Eucalyptus trees.
We always cut big branches of Eucalyptus and put them under our beds to protect us from catching a cold. This was specifically useful during the cold weather. (Yes, Ecuador has cold weather in the mountains).
If we were sick, my mom would put the Eucalyptus leaves directly on our chests and backs and covered with a warm sweater before going to sleep, the next day we always felt a lot better.
I’m an aromatherapist and I import the Eucalyptus essential oil that is produced in small batches from communities in Ecuador, the scent, the purity always brings me back to my childhood and now I can help many people with Eucalyptus healing properties.
