If you insist on traveling by car, you will want to make sure that you are avoiding the drive during high-peak hours. This is because you will idle a lot in traffic, wasting both your time and your gasoline. Another thing to consider is the current condition of your car. Is it a high polluting car? If so, then you may want to look into renting a nice fuel efficient vehicle or even a hybrid. Do not worry about the daily rental fees as you will save a lot of money on gasoline and you will probably have a much more comfortable ride.

Another reason to go for the rental is that you will not have to worry about breaking down and having your vacation ruined. This alone should be reason enough to make sure that you are using a nice fuel efficient rental car than your old beater.

An Airline Using Waste For Fuel

This may just be the beginning of a new trend and if that is the case, you will not have to feel as guilty about flying anywhere. In fact, it might even be encouraged because apparently, airlines can use waste to help fuel their planes. Believe it or not, British Airways has officially announced its plan to reduce their emissions by 50 percent by the year 2050 and they are going to accomplish this through the production of fuel from the waste from local landfills.

A “waste-to-energy” plant is being constructed in the East London, which will be able to take 500,000 tons of waste or organic nature and turn it into 16 million gallons of fuel for jets each and every year. The actual start date for the use of this fuel is scheduled for the year 2014. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, more airlines will follow suit and decide to take organic waste and turn it into fuel for their planes. Just think of all of the organic waste that is really just going to “waste” all around the world. What British Airways is doing to just the beginning and they are certainly setting a good example for all of the other airlines to follow.

The Lesson Learned

As you can clearly see, there have been and are currently a lot of advancements being made towards having green transportation. The industry has already come a long way and it may still have a long way to go before things are perfect, but we are certainly off to a good start. While the automakers are looking for more efficient ways to produce green cars, you can work on saving the environment in your own way, such as not burning as much fuel as you once did.

Every little bit helps. If more and more people would get involved, the quicker we will all see a solution to the problems that we are creating for our world thanks to our transportation needs and habits.
