When we think about saving the planet, we normally have visions of vast rainforests or exotic animals.  What we may not think about is the fact that there are animals that need help in our own back yards!  With the recession being on, cities and rural areas alike are noticing an increase of abandoned animals, ranging from dogs and cats, to pets that are more exotic, like snakes, lizards, ferrets and rats!  There are many reasons that people choose to abandon their animals, but the truth is that if you are looking for an animal companion, you don’t need to look very far.  Take a look at the difference that you can make when you decide to re-home and “recycle” a pet!

The truth is that animals are being discovered everywhere from foreclosed homes, to dumpsters to simply being released into a world that they are ill-prepared to deal with.  Their owners may not be able to take care of them anymore, or they may be moving to a place that does not allow pets.  When you are thinking about adopting a recycled pet from a shelter, consider the fact that even under the best of times, the shelter is going to be full to overflowing, and the staff is going to be stretched thin.   While there are definitely no-kill shelters out there, the vast majority find that the only way that it can keep up with the incoming flux of animals is to resort to euthanization.

What do you get out of taking on an abandoned animal?  In just about every case, you are going to be getting an animal that is well tempered and that has been checked out for any health problems.  They will be spayed or neutered and they will have all their shots.  You may even run into some purebreds at the shelter, and you will certainly run into a collection of beautiful, friendly animals that have no paperwork at all.  The thing that they have in common is that they all need homes, and whether you are interested in giving an animal a forever home or you are simply interested in fostering it for a while, you will be contributing towards shrinking this problem a little bit more.

Head to the shelter and see what is available.  It can be heartbreaking, but if you think that you can find the animal companion that you have been looking for, you should take a look around.  If you do not have your heart set on a young animal, make sure that you look at the older animals who have been abandoned.  It is much harder for them to find homes and you will be bringing an animal into your home that is much more sedate than a hyperactive puppy or kitten.

The shelter isn’t the only place that you can get a recycled pet.  Take a look online for services that will match you up with owners who are looking for people to adopt their pets out to, or keep an eye on the noticeboards around your town.

There is no reason at all to purchase a pet when there are so many deserving animals out there who need homes, so take some time and really consider where you want to get your next animal companion from.
