It is well known that Earth’s surface has much more water than land, but one thing that is important to keep in mind is that only around one percent of all that water is drinkable! With many issues being raised about pollution, the idea of preserving water in the home is something that more and more people are beginning to take seriously, and when you are thinking of doing your part to save water, there are many things that you may wish to consider.
Showerheads
When you think about showers versus baths, many people believe that taking a quick shower is more water conservative, when in fact the opposite is true. Unless you can keep a shower under a few minutes, the water that is used tends to equal or even exceed that of bath. The best way to combat this is through the use of water-saving showerheads. Currently, there has been a movement to create a specification for showerheads that disperse water more effectively and with less water waste. The main goals are to look into pressure compensation, how the water is distributed and the showerhead’s wetting capacity.
Water-saving toilets
If you are building a new home or simply replacing an old toilet, you will find that there is a great deal of value in looking into a toilet that has a WaterSense label. These toilets are designed to be more conservative with their water usage. When looking at older, inefficient toilets, you are actually looking at one of the biggest sources of wasted water in your home. The replacement of inefficient toilets with water-saving toilets could save almost 2 billion gallons of water every day in the United States.
Bathroom Sink Faucet
Even if you don’t leave the water on when you are brushing your teeth, the bathroom sink is another place where there is a lot of water wasted. When you are looking to replace the faucet, try to make sure that you do so with a faucet that has been given the WaterSense seal, and even if you don’t replace it, keep in mind that you should consider looking for an aerator, laminar flow device or a spray device that will reduce the water usage.
Take some time and make sure that you are saving water everywhere you can; it is one way that your household can make a big difference in way we consume the Earth’s resources!
